After borrowing Amanda's Grandfather's car for several months, we decided it was time to get our own car. Just a few weeks ago I picked up the Saturn. So far it's been a great car. I bought it from a real nice young couple and feel that I got a nice deal on the price.
With both of us, Ian, another one on the way ;) and the dogs Garcia and Sadie we felt we needed a larger car. No SUV, gas is too expensive. So we were going to get a Station Wagon.
Ian and I set out on 3.23.06 with every intention of buying a Wagon. Our first stop was
Platinum Motors. We had only been on the road for 10 minutes but I saw a nice used Wagon. We took it for a test drive and it was pretty nice. Then when we pulled into the lot to return the car, I put it into reverse and it stalled. Now it started right back up but this car is was for Amanda. It needs to run right every time. Then the car salesman piped up,
"Are you mechanically inclined?"
"Nope."
"Do you know a mechanic?"
"Yes."
"Maybe he could look at it and figure out the problem?"
"Yeah, maybe he could. Bye."
Then we moved on to
Sam's Riverside. A strange place. They buy damaged cars and offer them up to be fixed. The Wagon they had was a bit beat up. Hail damage. Tore up inside. Broken front light. Oh well.
The first odd thing is the car showroom is inside a warehouse. The car are parked bumper to bumper and side to side. So I asked,
"How do I test drive it?"
"You don't until you sign the check."
"Oh....."
"I can start it up for you."
"Ok."
I had already checked out the car and knew it didn't have power. Soon the salesman figured that out too. No problem, he went and got a jump pack.
The car wouldn't start.
He got another jump pack.
Still wouldn't start.
He hooked up both jump packs to double the power.
Still wouldn't start. Then he said something about the other guys using both of the packs to start a diesel truck.
Sure.
Then get got out the BIG jump pack. The one so big it's on wheels and he plugs it into the wall outlet. We even let it sit and charge.
Still wouldn't start.
At that point I walked out.
Then we headed to Waukee, found a little dealer called
Auto Image. It's run by two older but nice guys. The Wagon there had a small warranty, was clean, undented, ran well, didn't stall and started right up.
I now present our new 1997 Ford Escort.
